Matcha plus mushroom. Does it taste good? Is it really a healthy tea/coffee alternative? Today, I’m reviewing the Everyday Dose Matcha+ after drinking it for three months. Now, I love matcha lattes, KitKats, mochi ice cream… even my keyboard is matcha themed. I came in with a hopeful but critical eye–I’ve had my fair share of fishy matcha products.
Here’s my experience after I put on cherry blossom themed lofi music, ate some strawberry mochi, and brewed my first cup of Matcha+.
The Matcha+ subscription offers a set of free gifts, including wellness booklets, a rechargeable frother, and other cute accessories. It also comes with a special gift depending on the month. I got this tumbler. Just look at these adorable mushrooms. They seem like fun-guys.
The Matcha+ packaging is gorgeous with its vibrant tea green and space-like glimmer background. It’s taller than my other coffee bags, but much slimmer, making it easy to store.
Matcha+ actually contains more than just matcha and mushrooms. Let’s go over its main ingredients.
Everyday Dose uses Ceremonial Grade Matcha by Tenzo Tea. Ceremonial grade is a step above culinary grade matcha. However, while this binary way of categorizing matcha green tea is popular in the West, matcha is graded differently in Japan. Because of this, I decided to dive deeper into analyzing the Tenzo Tea brand.
Tenzo Tea’s matcha costs around $50 per pack and is organically sourced from Japanese farms. Japanese tea masters hand-selects seasonal, custom matcha blends from tencha markets. Tencha is a healthy tea that gets ground into powder and becomes matcha. Tenzo Tea reviews are overwhelmingly positive. It’s great quality, and the organic touch makes me a fan. It’s an excellent sign that Everyday Dose is happy to use expensive, high-quality matcha for their mushroom blends.
Matcha+ contains functional, adaptogenic mushrooms. Adaptogens can improve the body’s ability to adapt to stress and overall wellness.
The functional mushrooms found in Matcha+ are:
Lion’s Mane: A white fluffy mushroom that is popular for reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. It has the most neutral, mild mushroom taste, making it perfect for those who don’t want a lot of earthiness in their matcha.
Chaga: A super-mushroom that looks like burnt charcoal, the Chaga has plenty of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and even anti-tumor potential.
Both of these mushrooms are generally safe for regular consumption.
Does it have filler: Worried about “filler” used to puff up the mushroom blend? Thankfully Everyday Dose does not use filler. That means no cheap starch, mycelium, or grain.
I’ve been seeing l-theanine supplements everywhere recently. It’s an amino acid naturally found in tea, and promotes calm and relaxation (without drowsiness). I personally feel like the Matcha+ does help with my ADHD, which might be due to the l-theanine. There have been numerous studies about l-theanine’s benefits for improving sustained attention.
Other than l-theanine, the Matcha+ also includes other amino acids. None of them are as famous as l-theanine, of course.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It supports your bones and joints, and can also strengthen gut health and skin.
Collagen deficiency can lead to skin wrinkles, joint pain, delayed wound healing, and other problems.
Adding collagen into the Matcha+ means it can help you have an overall more balanced diet, which is important if you’re otherwise lacking in collagen.
So, what does Everyday Dose Matcha+ taste like?
Whatever you imagine mushroom tea to taste like, it’s probably not like the Matcha+. Mushrooms typically have a strong, earthy heaviness, but the Matcha+ tastes like regular green tea with a hint of umami.
I will say that when it comes to the distinct matcha taste, the Matcha+ is fainter. It won’t taste like the thick, flavorful kind you get at a formal Chado tea ceremony. But I’m not expecting it to be so aromatic since the Matcha+ is meant to be an accessible and healthy everyday matcha. Healthy ingredients are a large priority.
The mouthfeel of the Everyday Dose Matcha+ is good. It’s smooth and easy to drink, which may feel different from the usual thick matcha some people are used to. You can brew it with less water if you want it to be thicker.
Have you ever bought matcha powder? One of my main problems with other brands is that the matcha doesn’t blend well. It certainly does not spark joy when I take a sip and get a mouthful of solid tea chunks. Matcha+ doesn’t have that problem. I even double checked to see if my spoon was simply missing the powder–nope, the drink is just that smooth.
As for the appearance, you won’t see the unusually vivid Starbucks matcha latte green. The Matcha+ has a more natural, dark-green appearance. Less aesthetic for Instagram, admittedly, but healthy consumption is trending. That’s a trade-off.
Making Matcha+ is so convenient that the only bottleneck would be how fast your kettle takes to boil water. Just add a spoonful of Matcha+ powder to your hot water and mix until it’s smooth enough for you. The Everyday Dose subscription comes with a nice electric, rechargeable frother for if you want it to be silky smooth, but I personally ended up just using my chopsticks out of habit.
The Matcha+ has 40 mg of caffeine. Comparable to the usual green tea of around 20 to 50 mg, but less than a traditional cup of coffee, which has ~100 mg.
I think the Matcha+ has a perfect amount of caffeine, enough to give you an energy boost for productivity, yet balanced enough to help you skip the afternoon caffeine crash. It gives more alertness than a regular green tea bag.
I get caffeine jitters if I have more than 160 mg of caffeinated drinks, or if I need a desperate cup of coffee before sleep. The Matcha+ didn’t cause any jitters for me. It is formulated to supercharge your day with long-lasting clarity and energy, which it worked well personally.
Still, I don’t recommend drinking Matcha+ five hours before going to bed. It does have ingredients that raise your alertness and make you feel less fatigue, which can be insomnia-inducing for many people. This is important if you’re sensitive to caffeine.
Many people have endorsed Everyday Dose for offering great gut health benefits. As someone who fortunately does not have gut issues, I cannot say the Matcha+ made a noticeable impact on my digestive system.
Still, I can’t leave you hanging. I went on to research Matcha+’s digestive effects, looking at anecdotal evidence of other reviewers and looking at the ingredients of Everyday Dose Matcha+.
Like Everyday Dose’s other products, the Matcha+ is formulated to have a positive effect on people who struggle with digestive issues. Their website specifically says it’s made so there are “no jitters, no gut pain”. It should be easy to digest for people who suffer from gut problems, especially after drinking traditional caffeinated beverages.
Still, some people with GI issues such as IBS or mushroom sensitivity may find Matcha+ to be less helpful. It can vary from person to person.
I like to spice up my tea from time to time, literally. After the first time I tried Matcha+ by itself, I have always used sweeteners to sweeten up the tea. I’m guilty of using a lot of honey and brown sugar in all my beverages, be that matcha or coffee.
Sugar, honey, flavored creamers, these are all good ways to sweeten up your Matcha+, just like regular tea. Barista-approved creative flavor pairings can make your Matcha+ taste better. I find the base taste to be more palatable than other mushroom teas and coffees, but I enjoy all my beverages sweetened.
You may want to choose natural sweeteners over artificial ones. Artificial sweeteners cause me migraines sometimes. Agave, monk fruit, and honey are worth a try with your Matcha+.
The ideal timing for Matcha+ depends on your lifestyle and caffeine sensitivity. Early birds can use Matcha+ as a smooth energy booster, perfect for dreaded morning meetings or gym routines. Parents who need a calming dose of energy can also benefit from Matcha+ throughout the day.
Ice, ice matcha. Iced Matcha+ is pretty great during the summer, or if you’re blasting the heater and want a chilled drink in the winter. Simply chill your batch of Matcha+ or add ice cubes to your freshly brewed cup of tea.
If you’re already a fan of matcha, the Matcha+ is a great healthy alternative to your usual matcha beverage. It tastes good while offering various health benefits due to the addition of collagen, l-theanine, and functional mushrooms. It’s nice to enjoy your green tea while also getting health support.
Can’t or don’t want to consume so much caffeine? A lot of people find themselves struggling with caffeine side effects as they grow older, whether that’s jitters or indigestion or other health concerns.
Everyday Dose lets you try different options for energy boosts and focus. Mushroom Matcha+ is a great option. It contains significantly less caffeine than a regular cup of joe.
Matcha has many natural benefits. It is rich in concentrated antioxidants, l-theanine, and polyphenols. Matcha promotes better heart health, and can also be good for your weight and overall wellness.
Add in functional mushrooms, which have a wide range of stress-relieving and health-improving benefits, and the Matcha+ blend becomes an exciting morning beverage to try for wellness enthusiasts. Thousands of people report feeling better in the months after switching from regular tea or coffee to the Everyday Dose Matcha+.
Mushroom tea isn’t for everyone. If you’re pregnant or have health concerns, it is a good idea to speak with a physician before trying new foods or beverages. People with allergies and food sensitivities should also be cautious. Mushrooms and other ingredients don’t settle well in everyone’s stomach.
To minimize reactions to mushroom tea, try a tiny bit of Matcha+ before you drink an entire cup. Introduce it gradually to your diet so your system can get accustomed to it.
The Matcha+ starts at $50, but if you catch it during a limited time offer, you can enjoy 30 servings for $36 (only $1.20 per serving). The $39.99 refill ships in 30 days. It also comes with free shipping that takes 3 days on average to get to your doorstep.
While it’s competitive pricing when compared to other matcha options, the Matcha+ subscription can be steep if you don’t want to pay for thirty servings in one go. I recommend ordering a box of Matcha+ while it’s on sale (which it is right now). The ~5 free gifts, from rechargeable frother to stylized tumblers, definitely add a splash of value to the subscription box.
Unlike other subscription services, Matcha+ lets you skip, pause, or cancel at any time. The customer service is solid. You don’t need to hunt down an agent just to cancel the mushroom tea subscription.
It’s good, healthy, and I enjoy it very matcha. I like Matcha+’s smooth energy boost and health benefits, all blended into a convenient cup of matcha.
If you’re on the fence, consider trying one week of mushroom tea to see if it’s to your taste. Everyday Dose also offers a Coffee+ option that tastes more like coffee than matcha.
